PRICE OF FLOUR.
INCREASE OF £3 10s. A TON. CHRISTCHURCH, February 21. New prices for flour to come into operation on March 1 were announced yesterday. They are:—2001!) sacks £l9 a ton free on hoard nearest port; 1001 b bags £2O, 50lb bags £2O 12s Od, 2o!h hags £2l. These prices are £3 10s a ton in advance of those ruling at present.
The latest offers millers have made for wheat range from fis 9d to <s Id a bushel, compared with from os 3d to os 7d at the beginning of last season, an increase of Is fid a bushel. On an ■ average it requires forty-eight bushels of wheat to make a ton of flour, so that the wheat required for a ton or flour now costs £3 12s more than it did a year ago. However, a good deal of the wheat at present held by millers . was brought at (id a bushel more than the latest quotations. I Some time ago millers expected that. the price of Hour would range from £2O I n ton upwards, hut they have had to reduce their prices by £1 t° n *" order to compete with flour from Australia, whieli is now being in Sydney at £ls a ton for export to New Zealand. It is reported that shipments of Australian Hour are due to arrive in Christchurch next month. Many bakers hko Australian flour to mix with New Zealand. as they consider that the mixture gives i\ better loaf.
