ATTEMPT AT RECORD FAILS. SYDNEY, Feb. 23. Parker unsuccessfully attempted to lower the world’s one mile walk record. He covered the distance in G. 32 2-5, which is six anil three-fifths slower than the record. SENSATIONAL RAILWAY SMASH. SYDNEY, Feb. 23. A sensational railway smash occurred at Mawksbtirv river early this morning. A goods train of twentythree trucks, with two engines, was tie-set iicliiig a steep slope when the brakes failed, and the train got out of control and bolted across the bridge at a terrific speed, into Hawkesbury station, and crashed into a stationary engine. Ihe goods train was wrecked, anil the debris piled thirty feet in the air. Four members of the crews of both engines of the goods train were injured, and scut to the hospital.
