ALLEGED VALUELESS CHEQUES. NELSON, Feb. 19. Athol Joseph Reeve Sutherland, alias A. Stewart, alias A. J. Walierake, alias Frank Stanley Reid, aged ”2, and a native of Australia, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court witli issuing valueless cheques at Blenheim. Accused was remanded till to-morrow. THE P.P.A. CAMPAIGN. DUNEDIN, February 19. In the course of Opening last night the Protestant Political Association campaign for the year, ATr Howard Elliott, stated that he hoped to raise .■£lo.ooo for the work. a. third of which had now been received in cash or promises. VICE-REGAL RECEPTION. WELLINGTON. Feb. 18. This evening their Excellencies entertained at a reception at Government House, AVellington, the members of the Senate of the University of New Zealand and their wives. Among other guests invited were the AttorneyGeneral (acting for the Prime Aiinisteij and Lady Bell, the .Minister of Education and Lady Parr, Mr Levi (chairman of Victoria University College Council), members of the Professorial Board and their wives, and others officially connected with the University. ANOTHER PROTEST. WAI.MATE, February 19. Mr E. A. Craighead, President of the Waimate Trotting Club, has telegraphed the .Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. 11. I l '. Bollard;—“Wainuite and district are very disappointed at not receiving a permit. AA r o are purely a country club and thought these were to receive your first cnsideration.”
