' 1 have looked into the possibility of using the Kanieri Forks water race as a means of supply and beg to submit the following data for your consideration. The Council has the right to one head of water at the Kaneiri Electric Power Coy’s penstock at Kanieri Forks for at least eighteen hours petday. , I. have tested the pressure on the Council’s pipe line at a point opposite the l’ower house at Kanieri Forks and the maximum pressure over a period of twenty one hourly readings was (Hllis jier square inch. The pressure registered on the gauge in the Power House was 1081 bs |gr siquane .inch, equal to 270 feet of bead approximately. Allowing UOft. as the difference in head between the gauge and the Council's pipe line equal to approximately 121 hs. pressure, the amount of pressure available at that point would be 108-12 PCll.-s ier square inch, or an increase of .‘sll hs per square inch. The distum e from the penstock to the pipe line is ‘.K37ft. The Hater can be taken from the Power Coy’s by-pass without interfering in any way with the Coy s. preseiiit arrangements, 'me estimated cost of such a scheme would be:—1 1000 ft. 7 gunge solid drawn Mansman tubes, coated inside and out at 4s Od per foot, including jointing—£2so. 2 (j-inch dia. stop valves and T. fitting—£so. | Labour—£so. j Total—£3so. The advantages of such a scheme would ho the: (A)— Quantity of water available. I (15) —Increased pressure resulting in greater quantity delivered. ((.’) - The pipe line from the Forks •to the Lake could be broken for overhaul without shutting oil the supply to town.— Received. The Mayor said he thought they could wipe out the first two proposals i ml should di-cuss the third proposal. He moved to that effect. Seconded by Mi- Heins and carried. The Mayor moved that the third proposal he agreed to. Seconded hv Mr I’erlium. .Mr Heins said the Public Works Co-m----ini Hoc had gone fully into the question and the proposal meant that an opportunity would he given to find out the trouble. Otherwise the water supply would have to he cut oil’ from the town for a week or perhaps a month, till the trouble was located and rectified. After a general discussion in which the Overseer (Air Melvor) and Air J. C. Alacfarla.ne (Engineer) also took part, the Mayor’s motion, authorising tln> carrying out of the erection of an auxiliary j ipe line at Kanieri porks to connect up the water from the penstock with the Council’s pipe line, was agreed to on the voices. The Overseer was instructed to use every possible endeavor tu push on the work to speedy conclusion. Mr Mefvor and Air Alacfarlane both agreed that there was no doubt that the cause
of the shortage was a block in the pipe line somewhere between Kauiori Forks and the intake at the lake. It was resolved that the Kanieri Electric Ltd., lie notified of the intentention to take one head of water from their lino in accordance with the contract between the Council and Company, and that the Overseer confer with the Company’s Engineer. The Council rose at 5 p.m.
