A deputation from the Kumara Medical Association waited on the Hoard, consisting of Messrs W. 11. Eve mien, limner and Hart. Mr Spiers in introducing the deputation said a number of Idlers had passed between the association and the Board. The Chairman said lie did not think the aims of the deputation could lie furthered by the Board. The letter from the Board to the Association stated that the Board could not approve the propose I to form an association outside of the Board. A letter from the Department of Health stated that unless the money raised by the Association was handed ovr unconditionally to the Board a subsidy would not he granted by the Department. Mr Evondcn said they thought that the procedure of the past could he included in the proposal. -Mr Jeffries said that if a medical officer was appointed lie must he appointed by the Board and they would he responsible for his salary. A quantity of correspondence on the subject was read. The Chairman said there was no other way of helping the Kumara Association than the way they were doing at the present time. Air Evenden said that they had approached a medical officer with a view to obtaining an idea of the cost that would he involved. .Mr TTart said there appeared to he some misapprehension in regard to the Medical Association. Ho instanced the manner in which the Waiuta .Association operated in connection with the Inangahua Hospital Board, lie urged the necessity of making suitable arrangements for the keeping of a medical officer in the district, as there was 1
a prospect of the present, arrangement falling through by the end of the year. Air Hamer also spoke in support of the proposal, with a view to the keeping of a medical officer in the district. The Board were at present contributing £75 a year towards the medical officer, they hoped that they would continue to do so; There was an agitation to form a medical association and that was why they were there to urge consideration hv the Board.
Mr Evendon thanked the Board for the reception given. He did not agree with the other speaker that if the larger question did not meet with success that the present arrangement would fall through. Air Jeffries said if there was any possible way to help, then the Board would willingly help, hut before the Board moved they must he assured they were within the legal hounds. The Chairman assured the deputation that every consideration would he given to their representations.
The Board then discussed the request of the deputation and ATr Jeffries moved that the Board authorise the Secretary to make full enquiries and report to the Board. Seconded by Arr Wells and carried, Alessrs Aleharry and Duff dissenting. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Dr Valintine, forwarding report on Hospitals Conference: —Received. Afr Jeffries iiere retired. From Clerk of Court, Hokitika, in reference to procedure of the Courtin connection with civil actions.—Received. - I Front James O’Brien, ALP., expres- j sing surprise at the contents of the; letters sent to the inmates of the Old People’s Home and their relatives and, trusting that similar action would not be taken in future. —Received. j
Mr Davidson said it- was tho intention of the Board that the letters be written so as not to offend the relatives, but it would appear that some objection had been raised. The Chairman said the letters had been put before him before they were sent out. After a short discussion the matter dropped. From North Canterbury Hoard, forwarding report oil fresh Air Home foi children. —Received. From Wallace Hospital Hoard askinrr support of decision to have section 70 of the Hospitals Act repealed.—deceived; to he supported and copy of letter to he sent to Mr O’Brien M.P. From Taumarunui Hospital Board asking for information. —Received and supplied. From Dr Fisher, Kumarn, asking for leave and recommending Dr Eva Day as her locum tenens.—Received and approved. From 1.. R. Gibb. Waiho asking for material for nurses home.—Received. Front "Nurse E. C'liinn, resigning position as nurse at Westland Hospital.—Received and accepted. From Nurse Manzoni, resigning position as nurse at Westland Hospital.— Received and accepted. From. M. J. Shaffrey, Kumarn, enquiring if ram and pipes at Kumara Hospital were for sale.—Received From AY. TT. Evenden, Kumara, forwarding £75 as donation.—Received with thanks.
From 11. Delin, Matainui. asking support for £8 for subsidising erection of telenbone line to connect with the doctor at night.—Received. From Conservator of Forests enclosing list of sawmills in Westland.— Received; action taken by Secretary approved. From various debtors, in reference to maintenance accounts.—Received. Action in reference to outstanding accounts was authorised.
From Superintendent Westland Hospital reporting patients in hospital on ,‘ilst December —25 males, 1 1 females, ;;0; admitted during January: 12 males, !) females; total treated GO; discharged cured 9 males, G females; relieved, 1 male: 8 females; died 1 male and 1 female. Total discharged !) males; 11 females. In Hospital .‘list January: 25 males, 15 females, total JO. In hospital for over two months: 15 males. G females—2l.—Received. The House Committee reported the Matron required a stall' nurse and three probationers; that probationers Turner. Caldwell and Herrill had passed their examinations and credit was due to them and l)r llairtl.—Received. From same, recommending a number of works he carried out.—Received ; the lender of Lynch Bros at £9l for painting work was accepted; and other work at pig stye and fencing also authorised. The accounts amounting in £5lB l->s 2d were passed for payment.
