CONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOLS. PRISON DEPARTMENT TO ASSIST. AUCKLAND. Feh. 13. A scheme by which prison labour in the State sawmill at Emu will he utilised to produce timber at cost price for the construction of the new schools was explained hv the Minister for Education. The mill is run hv the Prisons’ Department and L ctiOing rin.u. matui and lotara, the hulk of the output being taken by the Railway and Public Works Departments. The mill is equipped with a modern plant, and about 411 prisoners are employed under a competent foreman. The Him Air Parr stated that llte Minister in charge of prisons was desirous of helping him to reduce the cost of school construction. Additional machinery was Icing installed, and it was hoped to produce, the necessary timber for the schools at cost price. Auckland and other North Island Education Boards were having the scheme submitted to them. DE.STRUCTIYE WANGANUI FIRE WANGANUI', Feh. 13. A destructive lire broke out at 3 a.in. in the Post Office restaurant in Ridgway Street. The brigade was quickly on the spot, hut the Haines had a big hold before the alarm was given. The lire spread to Dustin's hakehouse. and this, together with a billiard room in the upstairs portion of ihe block, and Ferguson’s sweet shop, were destroyed. The nrembes of H. Crysell. jeweller, and the offices ol Brace and Cain! wore damaged, hut a brick wall prevented further spread along the street frontage. The Nicholson .Motor Coy's 30-set't.er bus and a Hudson car, which were in a right-of-way were destroyed. The insurances are not available.

Thomas George Scott Smith, a hank ollicial, was charged with Irauduleiitly converting to his own use money which should have been accounted lor to the hank of New Zealand at Motuoka. The total sum involved is £-199 Ds <d. The alleged cffencs range from November 102:! to January last. After being finally charged, accused was remanded to : i .iear at Alotueka on 10th February. Bail was granted in self of £l5O and two sureties of 1210*1 each. OIL-BORING IN TARANAKI. NEW PLYMOUTH, Feh. 13. The Taranaki Oilfields Limited commenced drilling operations at Maturoa on Wednesday. The Tarata bore has already been driven 31101't. but encountered gas and operations have been temporarily suspended for the adjustment ami alteration of the machinery. CHRISTCHURCH SENTENCES. CHRISTCHURCH. February 13. At the Supreme Sourt, Thomas Hardy Moody who had escaped from Paparua and committed a thelt. was sentenced to a further two years gaol and declared a habitual criminal. Ttiinai Tumi Rebr. aged 35, for assault on a woman at Kaiapoi. was sentenced to live years gaol, William Robert Cook, aged 23, for bigamy and a false marriage declaration received three months.
Ivy Freeman, for theft, was admitted to probation for two years. Albert Norton, for theft, was sentenced to one year’s gaol.
