The “Daily Chronicle” in a special article, which it calls the true story of an attempt to induce some of the All Blacks join tho Northern Union clubs, say-: “The team was hardly a week in England, before Club agents began inquiries buL they were coldly received. One agent paid the expenses of a non-playing member of tho All Blacks’ Party to visit Oldham, where it was discovered that Maurice Brownlie. Nepia. Cook and Richardson would he particularly welconi" transfers, hut that quartette scorned the suggested defection. The agents resorted to more direct methods to attract Nepia, who. after the Ulster mate'n. was offered C 1290 cash, plus a tempting bonus. Nepia naively says: “But they did not show me the money I” The writer contrasts these details with an earlier story that, seven of the All Blacks took the initiative in enquiry into the terms.
