NAPIER, Feh. 1). _ Donald Stewart, a Maori, aged 1.. was charged with attempted murder at the .Magistrate’s Court to-day. hv placing caustic soda in a bottle ot medicine being used by Paninihia, Walker, his aunt. Walker stated the accused had admitted to her that !>,■ pul poison in her medicine to kQI her as sin- was his trustee. Iliri Watson. a young Maori girl, was previously charged with litis offence and was ncipiitted. Tlie case is proceeding. NELSON GAMBLING CASES. XESLON. February 9. lo connection with cases under the Gaming Act of alleged bookmaking, William Mosey appeared on remand today charged that on January 19th he did use certain premises in Trafalgar Street, known as a fruit and confectjonerv shop, as a common gaining house — l 2) that he carried on the occupation of a bookmaker within the meaning of the Gaining Act. Accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge and on second also pleaded not guilty, and elected to he dealt with byxa jury. Counse 1 asked that the summary charge he adjourned pending the hearing of the major charge before a jury.
His client woidd be seriously prejudiced if the hearing of the minor charge was taken now. There was also a charge against accused’s father that he allowed premises to he used as a common gaming house. - There was a further charge against .Maxwell, which would go before a jury. All the Cases were inextricably mixed up and he asked that all the charges he adjourned, so as to allow a clear case to he heard before the
jury. This the Magistrate agreed to, and accused was remanded on the same hail as before.
Charges against V illiani T. Moxcy, charged with wilfully allowing his premises to lie used as a common gaining house; also against Morris H. Vivian Maxwell, of alleged hookmaking, and a charge against Dominie Merlino of being found in a common gaming house were adjourned.
The depositions in the charges to go before a jury will he taken on Wednesday morning. The minor charges were adjourned until March 2nd.
ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE. AUCKLAND, February 0. A visit by detectives to a carrier’s office m Theatre Lane to-day, led to the arrest of Edward Williams, aged 43, on a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Several other men were arrested on a charge of being found in a common gaming house without lawful excuse. The accused appeared in the Police Court, and they were remanded, bail being fixed at £IOO for Williams, and Co each for the others. .MOTOR-CAR ACCIDENT. GISBORNE, February 9. A motor accident occurred this morning near Tiniroto. and as a result two men, H. Cooper (driver) and R. Le-'viec-k (passenger) wore brought into town to-night and admitted to the hospital. The car skidded on a grasy, road, and went over a bank, falling 12 feet and overturning. Cooper was the first to recover, and walked about a mile for assistance, a medical man being sent from Gisborne. Both men are suffering from internal injuries, but late to-night the etxont was not known. CHRISTCHURCH MAYORALTY. CHRISTCHUR H, Feb. 9. Mr Joseph Hamlet lias decided to contest the Christchurch Mayoralty. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 11. Dr Thacker will not be a candidate for the Mayoralty of Christchurch this year, but has announced that lie will contest the Christchurch North sent at the general election.
