HIGHWAYS COUNCIL
MEETING AT GBEYAIOCTH
A meeting of the No 12 District Alain. Highways Council was held at the Public YY'orks Office, on Friday night. Present : Messrs H. Watkinsou (resident engineer, Public YY'orks Department), L. J. Bell (Inangahua County), D. J. Evans (YY'cstland), J. IJ.iggjjus ((liDy), and I). ,J. Archer (Duller). It was decided to telegraph to the Alain Highways Board, draw/ing attention to the fact that subsidies on account of highways expenditure were due to the Duller and Westland Counties.
A cof-v of a resolution passed by the No 8 Council, Wanganui, regarding motor taxation was received. .Air Archer said the Duller County Council was favourable to the resolution. No action was taken. In reply to Mr Higgins, the chairman said the boroughs were excluded from the main highway,, district, and would not he affected by heavy traffic regulations operative in the surrounding counties. Alter discussion, it was decided to obtain a ruling from the Alain Highways Hoard. A letter was received from the Hoard undertaking to lay down experimental lengths of road, provided local bodies would contribute a. £ for £ subsidy. It. was decided to refer the offer to the Countv Councils.
The Chairman reported that the expenditure of £lOC<) had been authorised on account to construct a. bridge across the Little Grey at Alaimai, and a railway crossing at Aickciis was awaiting a'utihoi’isaHoln. Tlio lnatbral for 11 1 AY'ailio bridge was duo to arrive in Nc Zealand in Alarcli. . The Board's estimates for the district had been “tagged,” there being £l2lOO due from the Duller, Grey, and Inangahua County Councils. The statement of the AY'estlaucl County in the, matter had been accepted. Mr Archer said the Duller Council was in favour of the loopliuc road to YA'ostport being declared a portion of the main highway, but- the chairman said the road by the punt bad been decided upon when the highways were declared. In discussing the position of the leabodies. members of the Council expressed the opinion that 110 financial benefit bad been received through the setting-up of ttie Alain Highways Board. The chairman said lie had authorised the fencing of the approaches to bridges on the Alain Koutli road at flic- request of the local body. A request- had been received from the Greymouth branch of the Automobile Association for the. placing of n handrail on the south bank of the Torc111akau river, but there was no money to spare for the work. A letter from settlors on the Arthur’s Pass road complained of the nearness of bees to the road, causing danger to horses. A letter from the Hokitika Borough Council, asking for reconsideration of its request that- maintenance money he paid by the Board in respects of streets in the borough, which were really a continuation of the main highways, was referred to the Main Highways Board.
