Hiclnirds, was charged at the Magistrate's Court with making a false declaration in order to obtain a pension. It was slated that the accused, while receiving an ordinary war pension, obtained an economic pension in addition by falsely declaring that lie was unemployed, whereas for some months he was constantly engaged. Counsel stated the aeeused was tempted as a result ol sickness and his inability to maintain his family. Richards was convicted and ordered to collie up for sentence within six i months. The inquest on William Alex. Rainham. aged fit years, who was drowned on Safurdav afternoon, was held this morning. The evidence showed that A,. .1. White, a man nearly 72 years, unable to swim, endeavoured to rescue the hoy, without success. He appealed to a number of people, who were watching the swimming race, to go to the assistance of the hoy. hut no one took any notice, and the little chap was left to drown. 'I he Coroner (Mr Barton S.M.) commended White for his eflorts to.save the hoy. He commented strongly on the callous attitude of those who ignored the appeal lor help.
