WESTLAND ALFA IPS. (Hy Telegraph.—Special (o Gcauiuax) GHKY.MOrTII, February 7. At a meeting of t,io Highways Council last evening, all the Coast repre.sciitntivOK were present, Air JI. Watkinson, the Resident Engineer, presiding. Kegarding Westland County matters, it was reported that the vote for the renewal of Stafford Hridge was £7OO. The estimate for a new budge was £509 and approaches £512. a total of £llll. The Mead cilice is to he asked for a deviation .survey, but is expected ; new route would mean a higher cost. It was resolved to urge the work he accepted as proposed.
The Highways Hoard intimates that a, grant could not he made to Hokitika Horough for through trallic. It wa.stated that grants had lieen made to Brunner, Kuinara, and Ross Boroughs for highways trallic. It was resolved to forward the letter from the Hokitika Borough Council to the Highways Board.
Regarding the renewal of bridges in Westland tminty on the main highway, the Chairman stated it was not intended to do any work at present to the Three Alik- Creek and Hokitika River Bridges. Granite Creek hridge on the Ross Road was now in hand. Frosty Creek Bridge will he taken in hand next.
Tenders will lie called immediately fr a new bridge over Totara Hivc-r. Plans are lx-ing prepared for a new hridge at Horseshoe bend. Small bridges near Duffers, on the South Bond are now completed. Material for AVaiho Gorge Bridge is expected to arrive next month. Aieken’s Crossing on the Christchurch Hoad will he improved ns noon as legal formalities were completed, and bridges on Arthur’s Pass road arc being put in hand. The maintenance vote for the main proposals far a further section of Kumara-Kapitea road are being approved, permitting tenders to he called ea rly. Proposals for Afalfroy’s bridge and other works are held over meantime. WATER SUPPLY. Referring to Hokitika water supply AYatkinson stated he believed the chief fault of the defective supply was the smallness of the pipe line at the intake and lie thought a pipe line twice the dimensions was necessary. He had considered the position fully after an inspection of the plans of the line and would make suggestions accordingly.
