GRATEFUL SPARROW. LONDON, November 17. A Thames waterman on the landing stage of Cherry Garden Pier, Bermondsey, S.E. recently saw a sparrow in the river and rescued it, all but drowned. 'The bird was placed by a stove and dried. It soon recovered and ate a meal of bread and butter, after which it was released. It hovered about the pier for some days, and, coaxed by regular feeding and gentle whistles became quite tame. Now it refuses to leave the place, and follows its rescuer about the pier. The bird hits been christened Joe and lias learnt to answer a whistle and to feed from its rescuer’s hand. It refuses to eat anything but bread and butter. j
