I, At the inquest on the prisoner Henry Brown, who was killed at the Terrace Goal, the evidence showed that his neck was broken, death being almost instantaneous. The Supreme Court opened this morning before Justice McGregor. In bis charge to the Grand Jury his Honour said lie regretted the calendar was a heavy one, no less than eight indictments having to he considered, including several of a grave nature. Strangely enough, his Honour added, these cases relate to sexual offences. FINED £SO. TAUMA RUNUP, Feb. I. Henry George Morgan at the Alagistrate’s Court, on a charge of keeping liquor for sale and with selling it to a womna, was fined £SO. AN ABORTION CHARGE. DUNEDIN. February 4. At the Police Court, Susan Wilson, aged 55, pleaded guilty to two charges of using an instrument on a girl, aged 18. with intent to procure miscarriage and was committed for sentence. CASE OF INCEST. ASHBURTON. February 1. Cornelius Patrick Joseph Sullivan, of Timvald, was committed for trial on a charge of assaulting his sixteen-vear-old daughter with intent to commit rape and that on the same day he indecently assaulted her. The accused was not represented hy counsel and reserved his defence. * An application bv the accused for counsel was granted. Evidence was given by three daughters that the accused threatened to cut their throats with a razor if they told their mother about his acts.
