The cost of preserving good health is becoming increasingly burdensome to the middle classes, said Lord Dawson of Penn, the King’s physician, m an address to the Insurance Institute of London. The more medical knowledge improved the larger the expense that fell upon the head of the family. He had known of families crippled for in years hv the heavy cost ol modern methods' of treating disease. Every familv spent far more nowadays on the care of the teeth, on the tonsils, and on the shape of the legs and the feet of the rising generation. ”If it were not so, should we tolerate the slioVt skirts which are in vogue to-day f” lie asked. The home was becoming less and less suitable as a place where illness could be treated. There was more need for institutional treatment. The arrival of a baby was looked upon by the domestic staff of a house as a matter of personal grievance. In very feuhomes would the servants tolerate illness. Clinics and hospitals were needed for middle-class families, hut care should he taken not to separate the patient from the attention of Ins family doctor. Unless some solution of the present difficulty were found, the alternative would ultimately be a nationalised medical service.

Yesterday, Air Wntkinson. of the public Works Department, inspected the Borough water works with the object of as<ortaining what might be done t.o give the .Mental Hospital an improved supply of water. A visit vas made to the intake in company .vitii Air Melvor, borough overseer, who ■jointed out certain facts in connection with the supply. Later, Alr AYatkinson saw the .Mayor, Air Perry, and said that it would appear. owing to the lowness of the lake and the lack ol pressure, the tjiumtity of water desired is not entering the pipe line. At the intake the pipe* is eight inches for over a. mile, hut the line is almost level, and is more in the nature of a Hume. Where the line changes from eight inch to six inch pipes, there was only about three inches of water in the large pipe. Air Wntkinson has obtained toe plans of the pipe line, and is going further into the matter before coming to a final opinion. In the alternon. accompanied by the Mayor, Grs. Alackay and Evans. Air AYatkinson paid a visit to Han Han hill, where a natural supply of water flowing front an abandoned tunnel was inspected. It seems it will he possible to acquire this if considered necessary. 'There was a little over quarter of a head flowing yesterday, the water lining clear, and considered pood. A samjile as taken tor export analysis. Further data is to be procured, and when Mr Watkinsou’s report on the main nipe line is available, a special meeting of the Borough Council will, be called to deal with the matter. The" water front the linn Hair hill would he a useful supplementary service at such a time as the present when it is desirable to have a lair store ol watei in the reservoir.
