CONSTABLE PURCHASES BOTTLE OF WHISKY FUK. 255. WELLINGTON. .January 31. Mrs Aland Christie, the oe< upicr ol tearooms at l.yail Bay. was fined £26 and costs by .Mr E. Rage, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday, where she was charged on summons with uniat) lolly jelling intoxicating liquor. Accused pleaded guilty through her solicitor, Mr 11. F. O'Leary.
As far hack a.s two months ago, declared Senior-Detective Cameron, the police had complaints about the enndm tof the shop in question. The matter bad received the attention of Constable Coddingtun, who went to the premises and endeavoured to effect a purchase of a bottle of wine. The ilefciidanl took his money, hut demurred over the sale, and finally re!used. The eonstable returned the same day. and managed to purchase a bottle of whisky lor 25>. A search warrant was then issued, and live quarts of whisky, three quarts of whisky, three quarts of ale. seven pints of ale, and 11 bottles of port wine were found on the premises. Defendant declared, however, that the wine had been purchased for her daughter who had been ordered to take it when she came out of hospital. She laid bought considerable quantiles of liquor some little time before, and as no' empty bottles were discovered on the premises it seemed ns though it bad ; ,|| been sold. On a recent Sunday „ man bad been found drunk at Lyall IP, y ond the police bad information to the effect that he bad procured liquor from the defendant. Afr O’Leary said there were several points lie wished to make clear. It was o fact that doctor's orders were given that the daughter was to take wine, and a case had been purchased for the purpose. At a matter of fact the detectives were refused the liquor ->•' three occasions, and they said they came from a Irieiul of hers by the name Frank CL.nisei submitted that it cotih. hardlv be established that the shop was o wholesale sly grog establishment where liquor could he obtained with facility. The defendant declared she intended to charge 15s for the whisky, hut two pound notes were placed on ,hc counter, and she took them for .Ox notes and gave 5s change The magistrate imposed a fun of £- ( nod costs, and ordered the forfeiture of the liquor with the exception of the wine.
