Mr Wililnm Cain, of Alallsend, died yesterday morning after an illness of three months. He was formerly nil en gine driver in the Brunner Collieru s. was a native of Glasgow, and t'2 years of age. ITe is survived by a widow, four sons, and one daughter.
At a meeting of the Kumara Borougii Council a claim was received from the Health Department for the sum of Lo 3s 10(1, stated to lie due on account c‘ the Health Inspector’s salary. The action of the Town Clerk in writing repudiating liability in the matter was approved.

Tt will be seen by the report in this issue of the meeting of the Hokitika School committee held Inst evening that it has been decided to postpone indefinitely the annual district schools excursion that had been arranged to take place to Runanga on "Wednesday next. The reported outbreak of a dread disease in the northern township and the following restrictions of course made a visit to Runanga impossible and many parents were averse to their children taking part in any gathering at present. As the position now stands, consideration has been held over until after the schools reopen. Alter the decision of the committee had been made the order of the District Medical Health Officer came to hand, prohibiting children under 1(5 years of age attending any public gatherings, so that the action taken was the only one possible.

Messrs M. Jn tliis issue the Medical Officer of Health (Dr Telford) issues a notice torbidding children under 16 years of age from attending all places of public gathering, including picture threat res, public picnics, etc., in the CanterburyWestland Health District. The death took place in 'Westland Hospital early this morning of Mr Guy Murray of Wailio, where he had resided for over twenty-live years, being a schoolmaster there for many years. He was a native of Victoria, a single man and 6-1 years of age.
On Wednesday, 4th February, the morning train from Boss to Hokitika will leave at 7.. Vi a.m., and the afternoon train from Hokitika to Boss will leave at 7.10 p.m. Train will leave Hokitika for Boss 10.1.3 a.in. returning leaving Ross at 3.0 p.m. On Thursday afternoon at Kanicri .Messrs M. Houston and Co will hold an auction sale in the estate of the late Flkiaboth Head, when a residence and town allotments will be sold and also milch cows in profit. Particulars appear in another column. The following telegram has been received by Mr E. A. Wells, County Chairman from the Minister ul Railways: “ Have received your telegram with regard to transit ol lambs over Stuart and Chapman’s tramway, Waituha to Ross, in Government rolling stock. Matter lias been fully gone into, but it is regretted Unit as the track in question is not safe or suitable lor Government rolling stock, arrangements as desired cannot be made. (Sgd.) .]. G. The sad news lias been received ol the sudden death yesterday of Mr Gustav Rossenheck, the well-known settler of the Waitahn Bench. It appears that Mr Bossenbeek left bis homo yesterday morning on horseback to have a look round the farm. Not returning for lunch a search was made and his body was found by Mr Geo. Ferguson on the beach quite warm, lie had apparently not felt well and had dismounted and sat down, and passed quietly away. Deceased had a stroke some veurs ago and had been only in moderate health for some time. The deceased was a native of Germany, and 61 years of age and leaves a widow, hut no family. He was a well-known figure in the district, a quiet honest man who gained the respect of nil who know him. General sympathy will be extended to his widow in her sudden loss.
On Saturday morfiing the New Zealand Coal Inquiry Board visited the State mines and co-operative parties at Dunollie. Bewauui and Seven Mile. Later the hoard visited Dobson. Brunner and Blackball, and loft for Rcofton ill the afternoon to continue the inquire there. The hoard proceeded to Westport yesterday and to-day will tie spent inspecting mines around \\ estport. On Wednesday the hoard will take evidence at Westport, and will patch the express to Stillwater on Saturday, arriving hack in Wellington on Sunday morning. Subsequently the board will spend a week m Otago and will then go to Auckland, where further evidence will lie taken regarding the Waikato coals. I’he report is to lie furnished to the Minister pt Bailwavs on June 30.

Sword, is to he transferred to Christchurch, and that the present Traffic office staff will be replaced by a transport officer, who will lie attached to the staff of the stiitionniastor.
Arrangements for the West Coast Bowling Tournament at Hokitika, commencing on Monday next are now well in hand and all that is wanted to assure success is line weather. There will he 104 howlers engaged in the tournament. and of these ninety will be visitors, from Christchurch, Westport. Bniiaiiga and Greyniouth. The lady supporters of the Hokitika Club have kindly taken charge of the arrangements for the supply of light relreshment during tlie tournament and they will he glad to receive any assistance from friends of the movement, it being recognised that it is a somewhat large undertaking for a small. il willing hand of workers. The howling green will he open to the general public throughout the period of the tournament. and there is hound to bo a large number el on-lookers watching the progress of play. Pairs games will be in progress all day on Monday and rink games oil Tuesday. On Wednesday the section winners at Hokitika and Greyniouth will play ofl both in the pairs and rinks. There will he , full day’s play lasting from early morning till evening on each day ol the tournament.
