POSITION IN THE NORTH. WELLINGTON. January 28. At the Dominion Fanners’ Union Executive meeting Dr. Rcakes stated that the Minister of Agriculture has requested the Department- to draft an nmcindiiig measure to the Fertiliser Act. Commenting on an Auckland suggestion that, as the cattle tick question Mas becoming a national one the cost of lighting it .should be borne by the Consolidated revenue. Dr Reakes said that he was not prepared to answer a question whether the Government should take in hand the whole cost of eradicating the pest. Last session £3OOO had been voted to assist the Cattle Dip Association. The department had leal nod a good deal about the tick and its habits. The worst affected districts were south of Auckland and the coastal areas north of Auckland. The department- had undertaken to rid the districts of tick and had been furnished with funds by the Government to do

Air A. 11. Cockayne held that in the South Island and the southern districts the North Island they were not likely to find ticks, except in mild winters, and then not to any large extent. The department should he able to clear the districts infested, especially if it could keep them from being reinfected. The present quarantine was designed to that end. After discussion, in which Air A. E. Harding (ALuigawharo) expressed the opinion that it was most untair that the cost of fighting the tick should lie borne by a few districts in Auckland, ihe suggestion was appioved.
