SWIMMING SPORTS

There was a large eoneour.se of people at the Alunicipal Swimming Baths last night when swimming sports were held under the auspices of the Hokitika Swimming Club, The baths were lit with electric light. The swimming pool and precincts wore well lit, but additional lights are required for the diving and about the dressing rooms. The sports passed off very successfully and were greatly enjoyed by the GOO or 700 people present. The Alunicipal Band was in attendance and played a number of selections. In between the events the boftlts presented a very animated appearance, as scores ’of voting folk were disporting themselves to their hearts’ content. It was a very jileasing sight. The racing was exciting at times, the enthusiasm of the spectators being very pronounced. The diving was also very interesting. Ibe comic- element came to the purl ace at times, and much fun was enjoyed by swimmers and spectators alike by the dun with a barrel. During the evening the l’atron of the Club, the Hon. H. L. Michel, presented prizes won at a- previous competition to the following: Jessie Stevenson, Joan Adamson, Jean. Houston, Myrtle Gooch, Joan Rutland, Helen Staveley, K. Coles, AT. Sumner, lv. Lewis, L. Gibbons, AA’. AA’ogan, T. Gillooly, K. Aitkcn. S. Davidson, AY. Lakin, M. Davidson, A. Sumner, E. Hccnan.

Air. Michel congratulated the Club on the splendid measure of success achieved at the gathering. He said they could not estimate the value of the art of swimming in regard to the saving of life of others. The Club had a good record, and the fact that so many of the young folk were able to swim was a splendid testimony to tho excellent work the Club was doing locally. He wished the Club further success, and tho swimmers an enjoyable evening. Before Bhe evening’s proceedings closed, Air A. H. Lawn, the Hon. Secretary, thanked the public for their splendid patronage. He regretted there was not sufficient seating accommodation. but hoped before the Championship carnival took place in a foitnight’s time, that would he remedied. Ho mentioned that the gate receipts that evening were over £27, and tho support was a welcome addition to the funds of the Club. The officials conducting the races were all attentive to their duties, and the events were got off in good time.
