SNAKE IN SEWER SHAFT. SYDNEY, January ! I. A surprising experience befell a party of men engaged in sinking a deep sewer shaft at Willoughby, one of the near suburbs of Sydney. When.the bucket was hauled to the surface a tiger snake nearly 10ft long was coiied up in it. The shaft is 1.30 ft deep. Evidently the snake had gone down on a tout ol inspection, but how it got down remains a mystery. When the bucket lias hoisted up. the snake poked its head out and hissed defiance at the men who had disturbed its peace. With instant resource, a voting man name James Muir, a winch-driver, secured a rope, and, climbing to the top of the scaffolding, 15ft high, attempted to drop the noose over the snake’s head. He was so enthusiastic l lout it that ho overbalanced and era.she.l heavily to the ground, the reptile lurking its escape through thick glass. His right lmeo-cap was fractur'd, and his face, back, and head were irijiocd. Ho was- suffering also from shock. A small black snake was discovsrc t afterwards. There was no sign of the largei reptile. The men resumed woik fully prepared for any possnle attack by the tiger snake.
