MILITARY CANTEENS. PROFITS FOR SOLDIERS. SYDNEY, January 14. Australia is the only country in the world, so far as the trustees of the Australian Imperial Forces’ Canteens Fund are aware, that lias promptly returned to the troops the proceeds of the canteens’ trade during the war. The final report of the Australian Canteen Funds Controller (Major N. Loekyer), was issued yesterday by the Minister of Defence. Major Loekyer, during the war, was honorary controller of the A.I.F. Garrison Institutes. Troopship Canteens, and Prisoners of War Canteens. The canteens, lie points out in his final report, were entirely self-support-ing. No Federal expenditure was required. nor were public subscriptions sought. On September 30th last the sum at the disposal of the A.I.F. Canteens’ Fund Trustees was £1,059,850, including £300,712 from the Sir Ram MeOaughey bequest for the education of children of deceased or disabled returned men. The trust will receive a further sum of £190,000. inclusive of accrued interest, from the McOaughcy bequest. In respect of the canteen funds, the trustees have already disbursed £097,214 to 45,110 claimants in need of financial assistance, and it is expected that the funds will bo exhausted in about 18 months’ time.
