He recommended the use of a paravane. or sort of lateral rudder or fin. by which a battleship could be tilted to alter the gun’s range, much after the principle whereby submarines dived • oi- rose to the surface. “A pound of mercury for each ship, used with the apparatus, will do the trick.” lie declared. His plan was submitted and rejected, oil the grounds that it would too seriously retard tho ship’s motion. The inventor suggested: “The navy needs a driver to make its personnel work.” "
