SISTERS OF NAZARETH

The Sisters <>t' Nazareth are paying this week their annual visit to Hokitika on heluill' of their work carried on in Christchurch, lor the aged of both, sexes, orphan girls and hoys, irrespective of denomination. Begun in a temporary house in Ferry .Hoad, some 20 years ago, the present Nazareth House, a conspicuous land-mark in Broughton Street, adjoining Sydenham Park, was erected and occupied some years later. Here the aged men and women and orphan girls are surrounded with all the comforts of a home. The girls are educated in a well appointed school where they follow the programme of studies ol the other schools of the Dominion. Upon finishing school, the girls cVigage in domestic or other employment according to their choice and capacity. Four years ago, the hoys—numbering tOO —were transferred to St. Joseph’s Home, Middleton, where additions to the Home formerly occupied by Mr John Hall, were provided for their accommodation. The property, consisting of SB acres of excellent farm land, serves admirably the purpose of a school farm. Boys whose inclination on leaving school is in the direction of trades are apprenticed at the Addington Workshops, and elsewhere. The total number of inmates—old and young— cared for by the Sisters is 300. ‘

The work of the Nazareth Sisters is carried on in all parts of the British Empire, and recently in California. It's headquarters are in Hammersmith, London, and the SuperiorGeneral, at the end of last year, paid a visit to the houses in Christchurch. She was both gratified and surprised

at the magnitude and excellence of the work after a comparatively few teats. After the devotedness of the Sisiters, this is due to the generosity of the pople of Canterbury and West-land, of all denominations. The Sisters are calling on residents in Cue town and country this week. Enrlv next week, they will leave for Waiho. calling on the set-tiers on the return journey. The expansion of the work., and the increased cost of maintenance makes their appeal to the public this year a more urgent one. They will he deeply grateful for any assistance rendered them. Donations sent to them, care of the Convent or Presbytery, will be gratefully acknowledged.
