S..AL. at the Magistrate's t'ourt yesterday, when a number of confectionery dealers appeared on charges of Sunday trading. Considerable interest is centred in the police activities in connection with illegal Sunday trading, and the nmeni!ment to the 1908 Act now in force will have a liutieeable effect 011 the trading of confectionery dealers in illegal goods on Sunday. “Wo are endeavouring to enforce the law in this respect n.s well as we can,” explained Senior Sergeant hander, wlin said it had been found that children who were sent to Sunday school with money found their way into sweet Shops, while amongst other things people were employed who would otherwise have Sunday free. The- prosecutions were laid under section one of the Police Offences Act, 1921. The traders *ore : Elizabeth Tattle, Frank Clowcr (two charges), Ba-rnac Bies., Sid Glower, Johanna Siddels, Helen AViEon and Pearl Duggan. Lengthy legal zrgumeiit took place on various technical points in the cases of .Elizabeth Little and Frank Glower. The Magistrate (Mr F. Page, S.M.) intimated that he would have to take time to consider the cases, as the wording of the amendment was ul>stantially different from that of the old Act. The other cases would he adjourned for a fortnight pending decision in the two lr ; cases. Films of Cl and costs were imposed on the following defendants: —Mary Ann Curry, John Thomas Cahill. Arthur Cbrr. Aland Horton. Clarice Xewclick, Eliza ’Morgan, Walter Kelly, William Forsyth. For similar offences Charles Henry Grounsell, was fined £■) and costs, Alice Leitch £3 and. costs, and Abraham Spiro £2 and costs; Arthur Clolcl-sti-au £2 and costs; Oliver James Weight, £2 and costs.
