Ar/morcir scenic and holiday resorts abound about Westland, and in the vicnity of Hokitka there are a dozen places where folk may congregate on picnic bent, very little is done to make such resorts more attractive or comfortable for visitors. Nature is left to herself. Tracks are rough and ready; shelter from sun or rain is absent; conveniences of various kinds are wanting. In fact nature is just unadorned, and excursionists have to shift for themselves and make the best of things. Tn most plac-es where scenic resorts take a hold of people, there is sufficient enterprise to so embellish them as to add to their popularity. This is done by providing pleasant walks and attending to a number of little tilings the sum of which add to the comfort and convenience of patrons. In these days of motoring when traffic i“ easy and distance is of no object, it is more necessary than ever to make local resorts more popular still bv embellishing than ns it were with facilities to provide a more comfortable and convenient time than is now possible, when everything has to he contrived for the occasion. As matters stand this does not appear to lie the duty of any special body, hut there is a well staffed Tourist Department in the Dominion, and if a little time and attention could lie spared to negelcted Westland, a £I.OOO or so, could lie spent to advantage in making the conditions round about tourist resorts here more attractive. It would be money well spent, for the comnninitv as a whole could derive pleasure and a benefit from the expenditure, and lead up to more people moving about and patronising nature’s attractions.
