It is believed in some quarters that peace will be restored on the wharves at Sydney during the next few days as the result of an understanding which has taken place between the oversea shipowners and representatives of Hie Watersidors’ Federation. The latter body lias been impressed with the difficulty of the shipowners by the situation and their earnest desire to abide by the terms of the Melbourne agreement. This impression has resulted in instructions beino- issued to hr anehes of the Federation in other
States informing them that no action is to bo taken against oversea vessels loaded in Sydney by members of tlie Returned Soldiers’ Labour exchange. r l be stevedores e - iploved by the overseas shipping companies in Sydney are being picked up at the gates in accordance with the Federdal award. AVhen it became known that members of the Stewards and Pantrymens’ Association had signed on to work the Nairana indignation -was expressed by the Seamen’s Union and representations were made to have the men withdrawn. At a inass meeting of the stewards and pantrymen it was agreed to work the Nairana until further instructions were received from, the Federal executive regarding the policy of the Association. ! AVhen volunteers arrived on the Nairana the Wharf Labourers’ Union declared her black and ceased work, but there was enough coal aboard for the
voyage. PO LICE PRECAUTIONS. MELBOURNE, January 17. A strong police guard is being maintained in anticipation of trouble On the wharf and all police leave for the week-end has been cancelled. The city force will be strengthened bv country constables, who wil. be brought to Melbourne.
