Mr Lodger Bastien, manufacturer of snowshoes, an Indian .of Lorette, neat Quebec, who has been elected Conservative member for Quebec County, belongs to a well-known Huron family which has given many chiefs to the Huron tribe, and lie is the present chief. The tribe enjoys many privileges, including exemption from taxes, but they are not allowed to vote. For that reason it is questioned whether an Indian can hold a seat in the Legislature.
