What is claimed to he a revolution iii gramophones has been invented by M. Louis Lumiere, a French scientist. The new instrument has no sound box. tone arm, or horn, yet it is said to reproduce the human voice more naturally than it lias been done before. M. Lumiere was struck by the peculiar sound produced by percussion tit the centre of one of the common fans made of a large sheet of pleated paoer, the folds of width were fixed together at one end. After many" experiments lie succeeded in making from a ideated fan a diaphragm which gives tone and volume without distortion, diffusing the notes evenly from the folded surface of an upright round fan.
