The Finance Committee of the City Council has approved of the Lord Mayor’s minute in favour of the reintroduction of the 44-hour week for the civic employees. Some of the Reform Aldermen strongly disapproved of thus altering the hours from -18. SUICIDE SENSATION. SYDNEY, January 15. There was a sensational sequel to the dismissal of three City Council employees in connection with the electrical equipment case as tabled on January 10th. James Callau and two other dismissed men wore waiting at the steps of the Town Hall to be called before the Conciliation Committee, who were about to bear their appeals against their dismissals, and two detectives were chatting with them. Callau suddenly drew a- razor from his pocket, am! cut his throat. He was rushed to the hospital, but he died before reaching it. Callau bail fifteen years of honourable scrivce in the City Council’s employment. He was a man of highly nervous temperament. The secretary of his Union, says that C’llan ami his mates have a complete answer to the charge, the hearing of which was adjourned in view of the tragic happening. _____
