Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson will pay their first official visit to the South Island next month. According to present arrangements, they will leave Wellington on the night of February 4 for Dunedin, arriving there on February 5, and staying until February 13. On February 13 they will go on to Invercargill, where they will remain until February 16. Then they will leave for Christchurch, arriving there on the night of hchruatx 1/. They will remain in Christchurch until about the end ol February, when the' will return to AA'ellington. SETTLERS’ DIFFICULTIES. WELLINGTON. January 15. The Minister of Lands is receiving many requests for relief from Crown and Soldier Settlers who suffered by the floods. From his personal observations he is able to say that a great hulk of the damage is not of a permanent nature, hut grazing is wholly or practically ruined this season. Land Boards have been directed to make enquires without delay and if necessary to recommend the postponement- of payment of rent. THREE THEFT CASES. AUCKLAND. January 14. At the Polce Court, Frederick Alexis Wildnum, aged 17, pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking and entering various premscs and stealing a motor-ear. benzine atul so on. Ho was committed for trial. AVilliam Harold Cosgrove was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Charles Donald and stealing jewellery and greenstone valued at £3O, and with breaking and entering the Window of Arthur Lindsay with intent to commit a crime. He was committed far sentence. Francs Leo Credit!, aged 25, was charged with theft- of books from a private house and was remanded. A policeman said he saw Credin leaving the house at midnight. Credin bolted, but was caught hy the polecma.ii. A second man, thought to be Gredin’s accomplice, escaped. SOLICITOR CHARGED. TIMAR'U, January 14. Alartin Joseph O’Brien, solicitor, of Tima.ru, who was arrested here- to-day on a charge of alleged forgery in respect of a cheque, for £32 8s 9d, was brought before the Magistrate and remanded till January 21, bail being allowed, self in £2OO and one surety of £200.’
