The Stipendiary Steward reported that three horses fell in the race, no blame being attachable to any of the riders, deceased’s horse falling over another which slipped. The question of the restoration ol tlie gold standard in England was mentioned to Sir George Elliott, who yesterday returned from England. Sir George said prominent bankers in Britain bad said that the return to the gold standard would be made as soon as the pound reached parity with the dollar. This, of course, it had almost done. It had to be remembered that, tho carriage of gold would be a costly procedure and transport would bo at the rate of 1J per cent. A FIRE. AUCKLAND, January 14. A fire early this morning destroyed a corner block comprising Anderson’s (restaurant). Phillips (hi Ilia rd-room), Braeker’s (hairdresser). The fire started in the kitchen of Ander.sons’ anil soon bad a good hold but the lire hi igaile and helpers managed to save the adjoining properties. Tho buildings were owned bv G. S. AA hiteside. A young book-keeper, James 1* redcrick Ritchie, lately employed by Bagmill Bros., Ltd., storekeepers, at Turua, pleaded guilty to the tlielt of L’9l between July and December last year. He was taken on trial in May "at a salary of C2 10s a week, and Hater received increases to £3- Tho manager found a discrepancy ol L’.i in November. Ritchie admitted this and appeared and was arrested at lpper tlutt- on December 30th. He was committed for sentence.

Ernest Hawkings, .formerly chairman of the' Spreydon School Committee, was charged' at the Court to-day with having stolen C2l 19s Sd, the property ot the committee. T|h‘ money represented the amount raised at a concert organised to assist the fund for the improvement of the school grounds. Walter Smith, secretary of the school committee said the accused gave him a cheque for the amount, but the cheque was not met at the hankDetective Thompson. said papers found on the accused when lie was arrested show that he was financially embarrassed. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed lor trial.
FATAL RIFLE ACCIDENT. CAMBRIDGE, January 1L A fatal rifle accident occurred at the 11 nrahora power station last evening b v which a single man named ’lhomas F*rcw lost his life. The deceased and another veiling man. William Moulden, were in'the latter’s cubicle where Moufflon w' :(s cleaning a rifle with a piece of cloth which caught the trigger and the bullet struck Frew who Lis sitting on a chair about three feet away. The bullet entered the frontal hone of the forehead, fracturing the skull. It appears that Moulden had been out shooting the previous evening and had forgotten he had left the rifle Dr. Stapley and Constable 0 Sullivan were summoned and they found Frew unconscious. He was removed bv car to the Waikato hospital where he was operated on last night, but he died early this morning. Frew was aged twenty-one and resided at Teawamuk.
