THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Oavsio or I’nhkst! Australia is not singular in the record of iis labour strikes, though of recent years, in spite ol arbitration and boards for fixing wages and conditions of labour, there have been just as bitter strikes there as. in other regions of civilisation. There is a school of thought, which holds that much of the unrest of labour is due to its ignorance of the financial conditions of industry, that if the financial condition were revealed to labour, and wages and conditions made in accordame with that condition, a great deal of the unrest would vanish. It is extremely doubtful. Courts in Australia take into account the financial condition of an industry, which they have the power to ascertain, and make in part their awards acconliiHily. Vet the unrest does not diminish.
