DRUNKENNESS, THEN THEFT. WELLINGTON, January 10. “ See vvliat drink has cost you now,” pointed out Mr C. R. On-Wal-ker, S.AL, at the Police Court yesterday when Robert William Wilson, aged 13, topped a list of 39 convictions with the first one of theft. “Drunkenness, I suppose, has brought you down to this,” said the magistrate. CHARGE OF THEFT. YOUNG MAN ARRESTED ON WELLINGTON TRAIN. MASTERTOX, January 9. A young New Zealander, Henry Hoyden Moore, aged 27, who is said to have seen a god deal of service in the late war, was charged at the Alasleitn Police Court this morning, before Air R. Brown, J.P., with having, on January Bth, 1923, committed theft to £3O, the property of Edward Alaelariane Bundle, dentist, of Alasteiton. All- T. Jordan appeared for accused. Sergeant Sweeney asked lor a remand till 10 o’clock on .Monday morning, which was granted. Bail was fixed at one approved seeuritv ol C'2oo.
It is alleged that Moore, late on Wednesday night, met Air Bundle, who in company with another citizen, was returning from a party. One ol the trio suggested refreshment, and at the invitation of Air Bundle they went to his residence. It is stated that some skylarking was indulged in dui-int which i oats were removed. Alter a'l hour bail passed the host lelt the room and when he returned Moore had disappeared. A search ol the host s coat revealed that a roll of £29 was gone. 'The town was searched but nothing was to fie seen of the guest, lnquir.es wore made at his hotel, hut he had failed to return.
Later in the morning it was learned that Moore had rung a taxi proprietor from a hoarding-huse in Pine street, and engaged him for a trip to Wellington. The ear driver kept the appointment, hut on driving at the appointed place could see nothing of bis fare. Further inquiries elicited the information that another local taxi proprietor had had an early lare to Carterton, so the pursuers set off alter the morning train. Communication with the Fea t hors lon police was established too late to meet the train, so Constable Wallace at Upper Hull, was warned io be i.n the look-out. Carrying a full description of Hie accused. the constable travelled to Alangaroa and met the down mail train, and before it reached Upper Hutt Moore was under arrest. He was searched and a good deal of money was found in liis possession. Within a very few minutes Mr Bundle arrived in his ear in company with a constable, and Moore was identified and brought to Alasterton.
