Casey, who was charged with disposing of a ticket in the Port Nicholson Art Union to Segt. Sivyer, by which Sivver was permitted to have an interest in a .scheme whereby the price of a motor car might he competed for by a mode of chance. The information was laid under the provisions of the Justices of the Peace Act, 1008, and the offenee charged hv Section -11, Sub-sec-tion 13 of tile Gaming Act, 1008. On the tickets it was set out that prizes of oil paintings to a value of £3O would be given and on the back of the ticket were the words: “Turkish Baths are prepared to exchange for the oil painting the latest .model lord louring ear, valued at C 103.” In the evidence it was shown that defendant called out many times ‘lTerc you are! A motor-ear lor Is!’ The Magistrate was of opinion that a clear primao facie case of sale of a ticket in a lottery in breach of Section 51 o! the Gaming Act. 1.008, had been made against C’asey, who was convicted and lined £2-i. Notice of appeal was given,

Tlie story of a young couple’s elopement from Wellington was told in the Police Court when Henry Ernest Cook, aged 23. admitted making a false statement to the Registrar of Marriages at Auckland. Evidence was given that Hie accused wished to marry a. girl of 19. hut her parents objected. 'Hie couple then ran away from Wellington to Auckland and married at the Registry Office. accused declaring the girl’s age as 21. Accused was committed for sentence, bail being fixed at £'so. RAIN in CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 12. Steady rain has been falling most of the day. The. fall has come at a very inconvenient time, as harvesting is in full swing. The crops and stock are likely to suffer damage. DEATH IN A TRAIN. CHRISTCHURCH. January 12. This morning, just liefore the train from Ra.ngiora to Christchurch reached Kaiapoi Station, F. Sheppard Green, of Shirley, suddenly collapsed and died. He was sitting in a first class smoking compartment, and the fassengo: s noticed him collapse. When the train reached Kaiapoi Green was taken off, ami a doctor summoned, but be could do nothing. Deceased carried on the profossion of accountant and auditor. He was a prominent Methodist Church worker.
CROQUET. WELLINGTON, Jan. 12 The North Island Cloquet Tournament ended to-day with the final championship singles between Mrs Leech; ol Kclburn, and Airs Bartlett (Hamilton). Each won a match 96—90, and Mrs Bartlett was conqueror in the filial •23—21. DISQ PALI hi CATION APPEALS. WELLINGTON. Jan. 19. The Trotting Association considered the appeal bv liirkett and Pascoc, who were disqualified lor six months for inconsistent running, by .the* Westport Trittiug Club in connection with the running of Imprint and Some \\ iikes. It was decided to permit counsel to appear for the appellants, hut the chairman said fresh evidence was not admissnble. Birkett is now under examination. SCHOLARSHIPS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 12.
