A BANKER’S DEATH. N E LSO X, January 12. George Coghill. manager of Nelson Branch of the Union Bank died on Sunday alter a long illness. RIFLE ACCIDENT. BULLET ENTERS HEAD. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 12. Through the accidental discharge of a rifle "a bullet entered the head of Frederick William Walton, basketmaker on Saturday evening and he is now in a critical condition in the Christchurch I ospital. The accident occurred at 7 1", p.m. when a ear containing \\ alien who was driving, his soil William Walton, Gordon Kelt and Selby Freddy, was proceeding along the tram road at about six miles an hour Irom Bennett’s Junction where the party had intended to go for the purpose d peeling willows for basket-male.ng. Freddy, who was in the hack seat, had taken his rifle with him tor the purpose of doing some shooting. AA hen at Ihe spot where the accident occurred be saw a hare on the right hand side ( I' the road and he lifted the rifle Hon. the floor of the ear. placed a cartridge the breech, brought the rifle to his shoulder and when cocking the hammer tne rifle accidentally went o f and the bullet penetrated the hack o tit elder Walton’s head. Walton immediately collapsed, blooct running from the wound. He was removed'to Hie Christchurch Hospital where an operation eras pertoruwd yesterday morning.
