BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. CYCLIST SERIOUSLY INJURED. DUNEDIN, January 21. AN alter Alan-head, aged 60, a carpenter, was cycling down High Street last evening when the chain broke, the machine crashed into the Occidental Hotel. Alayhead was removed to tho hospital in a. grave condition. KILLED BY A MOTOR.. DUNEDIN, January 12. -Murray AfcGregor, aged 7, who was knocked down by a motor at Anderson's Bay Bridge yesterday, died in tlie hospital from a fractured skull. BURNED TO DEATH. WELLINGTON, January 12. A young man named Roy Reuben Temeries was burned to death as the result of a fire in his small hut situated in Riildiford Street, Newtown, and where he has been living for the past three years. It is thought that Tcnieris fell asleep while reading and that either his cigarette end was dropped on the papers lying about the room or that the candle overturned while he was asleep. The fire at all events, had a good hold when lie was awakened and it is believed he was overcome by smoko when he was making for the door as when the brigade was able to get into tho building they discovered the charred remains of the man lying on the floor near the exit.
RACECOURSE FIRE. WELLINGTON, January 11. A fire broke-out in the ■ Wellington Racing Club’s buildings at Trentham about 10.30 on Saturday night, and it razed to the ground a small building containing a refreshment bar ,storeroom. and men’s cloakroom. The building was of wood and soon was destroyed. The bar contained a quantity of liquor kept over from last races. Burton and Company, of Christchurch, are the caterers. The building was insured for £ISOO in the Loudon and Globe Office. Officials believe the fire must have I>oon started by somebody attempting to get at the liquor. The Club’s secretary states that the fire will not affect the approaching meeting, except that there may he no men’s cloakroom . S.S. KO.MATA. WESTPORT. January 10. The -Minister of Marino to-day wired Mr Holland as follows:—“ Re s.s. Koniata. surveyor has made investigations, and cannot find any justification for l-he statement that the ship is in an unseaworthy condition. There is no sign of any hole alleged to have been made by a barrow or repair of same. The master and engineers know nothing of the matter, and are satisfied as to the ships’ condition. (Sgd) G. .las. Anderson.”
