PROPOSED PEG U EAT lONS. Draft regulations for heavy transport under the Public Works Amendment Act have been issued, and will he considered by the bodies concerned in the course of a few days. The regulations classify lorries as follows: Class A—. Motor lorries designed to carry a maximum load of m >re than 1 ton. Class I!—Motor lorries designed to carry a maximum load of mote than I ton but mot more than '! tons. Class C—Motor lorries design xl to carry a maximum load of mo’C than 2 tons but mot more than A tons. Class D—Motor lorries designed to carry a maximum load of more than 2 tons hut not more than I tons. Class K—Motor lorries designed to carry a maximum load of more than I tons hut not more than ■> tons. Class K—Motor lorries designed to cany a maximum load of more than 5 tons. The maximum load of lorries is set out as six tons and the total weight of vehicle and load must not exceed ten tons. As regards tyres, the draft reads as follows:—“The minimum width of any tyre used oil any class of motor lorry shall he I! inches, and shall be such that the intensity of pressure of such tyre on the surface of the ground resulting from the weight of tfie motor lorry, together with the maximum load it is designed to carry, shall not exceed the following:— -1001 b per inch of width of tyre for tyres ini to bin in width. 6001 b per inch of width of tyre for tyros from bin to oiu in width. 7001 h per inch of width of tyre for tyres front Gin to Tin in width. 8001 b per inch of width of tyre for tyres from Tin to lOin or more ill width. The thickness of any non-pneumatic rubber tyre on any wheel of any motor lorry shall be not less than the following : iii for any tyre not more than bill in width. lin for any tyre more than bin in width, lmt not more than Sin in width. I tin fur any tyre more than Sin in width.” The Minister of Public Works in respect of any Government road, or the local authority or Board having control of any road, street, or main highway. may issue heavy-traffic licenses in respect of anv motor lurry, 'flic license fees payable in respect of any such license shall not exceed the billowing amount nor annum:— £ Kor Class A motor lorries ... b For Class I! motor lorries ... 13 Fur Class C motor lorries ... 21 For Class T) motor lorries ... ,6.8 for Class E motor lorries ... bb For Class F motor lorries ... Tb The license fees for motor lorries fitted with pneumatic tyres on all wheels, with the exception of Class A motor lorries shall lie lb per cent less than the aforesaid fees: Provided that the license fees for any class of motor lorry filled with iron tyres on all or any of its wheels shall (up to a maxi-

mum of L'Tb per nnnunii, lie 2b per cent, mole than the aloresaul lee lor such class. The speed limits proposed are as follows: Class motor lorries: 20 miles per hour. Class B motor lorries: IS miles per hour. Class C motor lorries; l(i miles per hour. Class I) motor lorries: 16 miles per hour. Provided that the speed ul anv ( b ss of motor lorry lilted with pneumatic tyres on all wheels shall not exceed the aforesaid speed for such class by more than 20 tier centum : and further provided that the speed of any class ol motor lorry fitted with iron tyres on all or any of its wheels shall not exceed b() per centum of the aforesaid speed for such class. The regulations propose that the width of a lorry and its load shall not exceed eight leet and that two reflectors, one either side must he equipped.
