T have the honour to report ihat tin works aut lv.. rised at the November meeting have boon cnmfilctcd or are in the course of completion as under: drainage. The concrete piping of tie' Healey St. drain has been completed and the contractor lias almost finished filling the

same. Livingstone SI- drain lias been denied of growth from the river to the (or! ace on the south side n! Hampden <Bt. I am awaiting the advent of storm water before attempting in build up the embankment between Stafford

and Hampden Streets authorised in connection with this work. TJio fhirning on the top end of Livingstone St. drain is beyond 'reasonable repair and ■should lie renewed or piped. The creek between Stafford and Weld Streets on the East town belt lias been cleaned of growth and weeds. I propose turning part of the storm water from Livingstone St. drain down the creek hod to scour out the accumulated silt. The open drain on the East side of Brittan St has been cleared out. to enable the levels to he taken preparatory to deepening the drain. ROADS. The approaches to Jodie and Davie j streets on the north side of Hampden ■St., have been piped with nine inch earthenware pipes and widened to the hill width of the road. When the filling has .settled, they will be top dress-j ed with fine beach gravel.

The dismantling of two dilapidated bridges in Jollie St. has been partially completed and will he completed hv the time this report- reaches the Council table. The water table on the Cemetery Jtill mad has been remade and minor re pairs made to the road. I would point J out that the hulk of the heavy traffic to the Afental Hospital buildings goes over this road, and would respectfully .suggest that the Government Department controlling that Institution be asked to subsidise the cost of maintenance. Portion of the road on the lTau-Hnu bill is in had repianr, thereby endangering the water main. As this road is maintained by the County, T suggest that the attention of the County Overseer lie drawn to the matter. The footpaths and water tables in the central portion of the town have I been cleaned of weeds and the spoil I has been used in filling a depression on the north side of Park St. RESERVES.

Cass Square has Jiad the grass mown with the new horse drawn mower which worked quite satisfactorily. The porI lion outside the playing area has been hand .mown and cleaned. The circular

track has been raked over, and weeded and is much improved in its appearance. ALuandrcw Square has had the routine attention and the seats will he repainted a.s the opportunity arises. ceaietery. The sexton has been engaged during

the month in mow ing grass and weeding the paths. A new wheel i.s required for fin' hand cart used at the cemetery. ABATTOIRS. The approach to the stock yards at tlie abattoirs has been gravelled and levelled, taking forty loads of gravel. The yard has been partly cleared of weeds. The Pound has had a good coating of gravel, eighty-nine cubic yards having been used fur the approach and stock yards. A water eonneefion Jins also been put in to the pound, and drinking troughs for the stock. The footbath on the north side of Hampden Street from l.vingstone ,x(. to the ra'ccoiii'M' load has been gravelleil.

WATER. WORKS. | The water supply has fern most unsal i.-t'ai t.iry. During the month of December there has been a steady fall in the reservoir reading and at. the time of writing it is practically empty. Warnings have been given to the public to use the water sparingly, hut the practice of washing down with hoses is .fill iml iderd in. I'Tiuii I L’c, 171 It, to .lauuaiw '-’ml.. I! 125, I have made six l rips of inspection on tlm pipe line.

ami have traversed .the complete line lluce times. On Dec. 1 Till.. 1021. f examined nine air valves, all under high pressure, only one of which opera ted correctly. Dec. 18th. I. completed the examination of the line, inspecting in all twenty-three air valves and fiiiir scour or by-pass valves. Of the air valves, twenty-two were defective some having the air vents closed with wooden plugs. On January Ist., 1025. in company with the chairman of Public Works Committee, and having the assistance of the Engineer’s plans we uncovered four air valves hitherto unknown. There was a considerable amount of air under compression at these valves. The Engineer's plans of the original pipe line show fifly-fwo air vents and air valves anil eight sumps. At present I can account lor only twentyseven air valves while the sumps have been disea riled by previous overseers. The track through the pipe line is ovor-grov n rendering a thorough inspection of the pipes almost impossible. The protecting shield at the intake is in good repair. The intake pine is perfectly dean and absolutely free from vegetation. I have taken the opportunity of having the. reservoir thoroughly cleaned out. AIAINTEXAMTO. The lior.se and dray have been engaged largely in general maintenance of the streets. Received. Emm J. Jarman. Alnnnger of ALal-

toils i-oporti 11 jr durmo December then 1 were examined: 32 cows. 31 lieifers, ■lo bullocks, -JIO sliecp. 107 Inmbs, 22 pics, 20 calves. Condemned 1 cow. 1 pip. Fees for period £B3 2s (Inst year £°s 1 Is). - Received The doe: lax | o r tlie ye.'ir was fixed *!.t IDs per dec (except entile docs 2s (id). It was resolved that tlie Mayor. Messrs .Jed'ries and F.vaus wait on tlie fl, n. Mr Pollard next evening in reference io tlie reipiest for a revaluation of town, to lie ureed as an urgent matter. Tlie Council rose at 0.30 p.m. ggQMßitW^^
