A BORROWED CAR. AUCKLAND, January S. In the Police Court, Jack Anthony .iiurphy, aged twenty-four, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for converting to his own use at Gisborne a motor-car valued at £l3O, the property of George Crawshaw. The ear was taken by the accused and two other men on October 21 and driven to Te Aroha, where it was abandoned alter being 'damaged to the extent of £SO. The two other men had previously been dealt with.
CHARTERED STEAMERS ARRIVE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 1). The Union Company's chartered steamers, Tilyun and Sheaf Mount, arrived from San Francisco to-day, having done the 0600 miles within three hours of each other. The former left six hours ahead of the Sheaf Mount and arrived about t'nrc ■ hours ahead. WOMAN’S BAD RECORD. AUCKLAND, Jan. !). At the Police Court. Margaret Beatrice Brodie, was convicted on seven charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences. She wa.s sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Mr Poynton said it was puzzling to know how a woman with such a had record could get charge of two separate cottage hospitals in this country within a short, time of completing sentence in Australia for fraud. The sentence' on the other charges was deferred. If the accused cannot be deported she will come up to receive a longer sentence, if possible, in the interests of the community. N.Z. WARSHIPS. AUCKLAND, Januarv S. 11.M.5. Laburnum left yesterday on a northern cruise, and will return on Eehruary Kith. She then begins a criu.se to New Plymouth and other West Coast ports. 11.M.5. Veronica remains at Auckland until Eehruary (Ith, when she starts a cruise along the East Coast ports of both islands. 11.M.5. Dunedin will carry out naval manoeuvres in Ilauraki Cull' from January 27th to February (Ith with 11.M.5. Laburnum and 11.M.5. A pleasine feature was an improvement in cot-up. while elassinc received more attention, and skirl, inc of lloeccs was more coneral. The comparison with South Island sales, showed the market was firm at late rates established. Compared with values at last Wancanui sale, the market probably was ruling tit an uverace of .'ld lower for lleece wools. No change was apparent in pieces and oddments. Lambs’ wool met irrecular competition and resulted in withdrawals. 'I he rai.ee of prices was not available tonight.
