The number of people killed in London street accidents last July, August, and September was 223, states a .Scotland Yard report, an increase of Go, compared with the corresponding period a year ago. Again the bulk of the increase is noted in the .groups mentioned above. Discussing the proposals in Chief Constable Bassom, the metropolitan traffic director, lor an extension ol the one-way traffic streets, an official ot the Automobile Association said yesterday that the scheme would give real relief to congested thorough lares in certain < ircumstances. Mr Ikisil Mott in bis presidential address to the Institute of Civil Engineers last evening suggested underground streets lor London. At certain specific points inclined crossings would be cf considerable value. .Such crossings might he constructed at Hyde Park Corner, at the junction of Waterloo Bridge and the Hi rand, at l.udgate-hill. and at the junction ol Blnckfriars Bridge wilh Queen Yicior-ia-stredt and the Embankment. BOLSHEVIK SHIP. LONDON. November 5. The Bolshevik ship Toaritsh, which has been lying in the docks at Port Talbot, (ihiniorganshire, is due to sail to-morrow. The captain, who was taken from a Russian prison to navigate the ship, and his 7-year-old son, carried as a hostage, have escaped from the ship. Another Soviet ship, the Bolshoi it, has arrived at Cardill nnd is disehaiging Russian timber. It is stated that the ship is controlled by a committee of four—-an engineer, a. navigating olfieer. a fireman, and a sailor appointed bv tbe crew.
