SHEFFIELD SHIELD AIATCH. AIHLBOI I’NE, January G. A meeting of representatives of the Victorian and New South Wales Cricket Association decided to play the postponed Sheffield match. New South Wales versus Victoria, in Sydney on January 21. “HERALD” COMMENT. SYDNEY, January 7. The “Herald”, commenting on the cricket, says: Ilearne bowled almost throughout the innings. He is a very deceptive howler and there is much more guile in his amiable looking slows than is apparent from a distance, lie keeps a good length all the time and bowls with the batsman’s knowledge of tilings. His bowling yesterday was certainly very good, hut not good enough, one thinks to warrant the total exclusion of Tylde.sley from the howling crease. Tt was an overnight Australian expectation that T.vhlesley would he the chief problem for the batsmen, so that the remarkable perseverance with Hoarne was as welcome a manoeuvre as it was surprising.
Taylor's innings was superb in every respect. He showed wonderful restraint throughout his defence and appeared much more solid and effective than usual, while his stroke play was charming in its grace of movement, the ease in execution and‘the surprising, pace imparted to the ball. Tt was a first class innings which greatly improved Taylor’s international reputation. It also had the supreme value of being played wli.cn it was sorely needed. He assuredly deserved his century distinction. For England to got the 372 required to win on the present wicket is a most formidable task to accomplish. Tt
is an expectation not. warranted by the uneven nature of the .English batting lo date. Tt will need to be a wonderful performance for England to succeed. (Received this day at 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, January G. Rallies writing in the “Daily Chronicle ” says: “Ilearne howled better than ever in the Australian tests and bis success is very opportune. I hope he bowled better than usual and that it was not a case of the wicket giving him considerable help, otherwise England’s task is tremendous. Tale accomplished a wonderful performance in sending down the equivalent of lID English overs, which cost 241 runs. This is great howling. Continuing in this form Tale will create a new howling record lor tests, which stands at thirty-four wickets, created in .1.411. If Tate excels these figures I shall be the first to iinigratiihile him. 1 believe hi> will. Douglas and Ty! i-'slev have not covered themselves with glory in this match. There is a possibility flint Freeman will return for the sixteenth and that H0w.41 will be given a chance. 1 am confident we have sufficient. batting str..‘upjli to knock (If the rugs, espeeis ly as '.llf time factor does not enter into consideration.” Philip Trevor, in an art! le in the "Daily Telegraph ” states: " I van advance no technical reason why the Englishmen should not :.in < ' the required 31S mils. it matters woie the oilier way should lint he confident the Australians would not make the runs. It simply amounts to whether our men have grit. II wo lose, technical excuses about the wi'-ket will serve, unless it. should be il l nagco by rain. If we win. without boast ■ g wo may congratulate I’m d t ul i n raining about the greatest of all test victories.’’
