A. Kirk, chief steward on board the steamer .Makura. was partaking of Christmas dinner with a lady aboard when they were treated to n deluge ol hot soup with the result that John Gordon Lovell, a young steward, was charged with assault on the high seas in the Police Court. The incident was the result of a reprimand by Kirk three days previously. Lovell came to the door remarking that he had only a lew days to go and threw the plates of soup at Kirk. He was fined L's, including Cl compensation for damage to clothing.
AIAKAMA HOLD-UP EXPLAINED AUCKLAND, January 7.
The delay of the Alarama at Sydney last Friday was not due to the shipping trouble which is holding up a large number of steamers in the Australian trouble, hut was caused by the arrest on. hoard the vessel of a stokehold hand on a charge ol thelt nearly a week previously, of the effects of ilie* third engineer who was on holiday leave. The man who was arrest,..l accused two other .stokehold hands of being implicated in the thelt, hut this the two men denied. Owing to the police arresting the men 2G of the .Mara ma's stokehold staff walked ashore as a protest. As it was after sailing time the Maraina left the wharf at 12.3;) p.in. and anchored in the hay. Eventually the two men accused by the first man, who was arrested, were released and this ended the dispute. .Members of the crew who had left the steamer were taken off to the vessel In a launch and the Alarama sailed at 2.45 p.tn. for Auckland where she arrived yesterday afternoon.
ROWING PROPOSAL. DARCARYILLE, January 7. .Major Hornblow lias received a cable from \V. AleDevitt. the oarsman, stating through the retirement, of Paddon, the title of worlds’ champion reverts to him, and asking Air Hornblow if the offer to provide a purse for a rare for the world's championship on the Northern AVairoa River still holds good. Mr Hornblow is now seeking support and is meeting with a lair measure of success, lie will reply to AleDetilt at the end <f the week.
SOLICITOR iX TROUBLE. AUCKLAND, January 7. Lawrence James i’lvmlergast, a solicitor, was charged at the Police Court that lie failed to account for GRIG received by him in 1 1 list. lie was remanded for a week. The chief detective stated that further charges are to he laid against the accused.
A RARE SHARK. RI.KXH ELM. January 7. An eight-foot, seven gilfed shark, which is a very rare species, was captured by a Blenheim Deep-sea Fishing ( lull party at Port l.ignr. Pelorous Sounds, laming the holidays. Only two er three of this type of shark have been taken in /New Zealand waters previously.
