Trank Atkinson, a well-known Hourmiller, at Sentry Hill was found drowned in a well at his residence ye.ster eve, the circumstances pointing to suicide. TENNIS. BLENHEIM. December 31. The -rst inter-provincial tennis match [ ever played .Marlhoroueh v. Wellington resulted in a win for Wellington by six matches to four. In the singles Marl horn ugh won four of seven matches played but in the doubles Wellington won all three matches. Mitchell and Mills (Marlborough) put up a sterling performance against AYliite Parsons, and Pigou, the game going to 12-10 in the third set before the Wellington pair won. This was the deciding game in the match. In Marlborough tenuis tourney Miss Mlirisou (Christchurch) secured five wins including the ladies singles championship. Harding singles, and combined doubles. The men’s ebnmpionship went to (lolling (Wellington).
FLOOD DAMAGE. CARTERTON. Deeember 31. Ifon. A. D. McLeod (Minister of Lauds) accompanied .T. B. Thompson (under-Secretary) and Sutherland (Ranger) paid a living visit yesterday to Maramnti, Pihautea, and Tawlia soldier and Crown settlements to inspect the flood damage and river erosion. They found a number of settlers have suffered largely as a result of recent Hoods. Fences are flattened, lucerne and bay crops destroyed, while in many cases pastures are practically ruined for flic balance of the milking season, through the silt deposit. River erosion in several plates has assumed serious proportions. Tt was decided that a report he procured from the Public Works Department, as to the best method of dealing with the situation. It was intended to visit Tewhiti and Tcoreore settlement also, but time did not permit. CHESS. NELSON, December 31. Maltha Jane O'Shaughnessy. who was arrested on a charge of unlawfully using an instrument on a woman, aged 19 years, was brought before the Court this morning. Jt was slated in Court that the young woman was able to leave the hospital yesterday. The accused was remanded till January 9th. in one security of C2si) and two of £123 each.
