CRICKET.
AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. OAR LX ASSOCIATION “ HERALD ” COMMENT. SYDNEY, December 29. The “Herald” commenting on the cricket says the excellence of Freeman’s form was as unexpected as it was gratifying, especially to his comrades. The little liosie bowler gave an exhibition of plucky endeavour, during which he displayed a very correct defence even against the intricacies of Mailey’s howling. He deserved every run of his fifty not out, with which he retired at the close of the innings, one of the highest scores in his career. Woolley’s innings was a model one, almost devoid of defensive play, since the batsman and not the bowler, -was the attacking party. The feat of Woolley's represented tile sixth individual century score of the match and the second occasion on which the brilliant left-hander has reached these figures in test cricket. That little fact was worth notice, because among English batsmen. C. Mead being the only other left bander to make a century lor England in a test against Australia. England’s wonderful achievement of scoring 111 in the last innings established a new record in test cricket, the previous highest being 370. To get so many runs in the fourth innings ot a lest match running into the ninth day from the commencement of play on a wicket on which twelve hundred runs had already been made was really a remarkable performance and provided a stimulating compensation for the beaten side. PLUXKET SHIELD MATCH. CHRISTCHURCH, Dee. 29. The I’lnnket Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury was resumed to-dav in broken weather. Canterbury in their second strike rail up 289, Patrick playing a splendid innings for 129. Blunt made 21, Boon 25, and Read 37. In the bowling Smith took 5 lor 100 and Aleott 3 for 71. In their second innings, Auckland have lost two wickets for 21.
