AIIDSL'AI-Mi:i: AIKKTINH. FIRST DAY UKSCBTS. The openinp day of the Westland Raeinp Club's meetinp yesterday (Boxinp Day) was ushered in with line weather, hut cloudy. About 10 a.m. there was a heavy shower hut tile wind eharped Irom the north-east to the south-west, and the sky pradiially ( h-ared. The various officers of the Club had everythin.!; in splendid order and there was an absence of any untoward hupponinp, the Stipendiary steward havinp an easy afternoon. The Municipal Band was in attendance and played an enjoyable propranimc. Speculation was brisk, and Mr 11. Byiieh and his stair handled the sum ol £11),SB) for the day as apainst £11.to!) for the first, day last year, a decrease of £4lO. After the race for the AYcstland Cup the President of the Club (Mr AY. K. Williams) addressed the patheriup in the hirdeape, prior to the presentation of the handsome silver cup donated hv the Hokitika Licensed Victuallers Association .
