Reference was made lo the death ol I lie lion .1. Ilrimmond. M.L.C.. by (he chairman, .Mr 11. .1. Bigimll. who said that .Mr (irimmnnd had been a member of the Boaid for many years, and had always used every endeavour to further ils inleress. lie had retired from the Board of his own free will, as he was cnimcetcd with several oilier local holds. Mr Bigncl! moved, and Mr ”. Wild seconded, and the motion was. carried in the customary manner:
“That a lid ter of sympathy he sent to the relatives of the late Mr <!rimniiiud.” Al’l’Ol XTMKXTS. Appointments ccnlirmed included:— Miss ('. liuurke. assistant mistress. Greymoutli. Designations accepted included:— .Miss A. Benny, head teacher. Chortsey; Miss K. C'reagh. sole teacher, Dohsan; Miss 1). Flint, sole teacher. .Jacksons; 11. Fmmette. probationer, Boss. BLTI.mXGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Committee recommended that a grant of £•!() lie made for improvements to the Arahura school, tlie total cost being £lll 8> 9d. the school committee to lie informed that it will he expected to find the balance required. The Department advised that a grant had been made towards ground improvements at the Cobden school. 'The Department is to he urged to re-coiisider its decision not to allow the teaeheV’s residence at Waitalia being converted into a shelter shed and to pay house allowance to the teacher.—Approved.
I! Mi’ll ESKXTATIOX OX THE BOAT!D The chairman reported on the recent conference and referred to the necessity for provision being made for a hotter distribution of representation on the Board. At present Christchurch City had two members, Timani (four schools) two members; South Canterbury. urban area, two members; MidCant erbury. two members ; and West Coast and Xortli aCtnerbury, two members. It was decided to set up a committee consisting of Messrs Bignell. Gow, Spencer, and Andrews, to report on the subject to the next meeting of the Board.
AGRICULTURE AND MANUAL TRAINING. The Agricultural ami Manual ami Technical Committee reported that the following resolution had hoen forwarded for discussion at the conference of agricultural instructors to he held in Wellington in Kebruarv next:-“That whilst recognising the value of technical elementary science in connecton with our primary schools, the hoard is strongly of the opinion that the practical side of agricultural education should not he overlooked. It further affirms the principle that the subject ol elementary agriculture should he made compulsory for all schools, where it is practicable to carry n the work: and teachers should ho encouraged to become proficient in teaching agriculture by receiving extra grading marks for any special merit shown at the result of work done.”
