The cause of the outbreak was stated to he a hole in the chimney, which allowed the flames to ignite the hoards. Little damage was done. This work had been done with the same accommodation as in former years, and had result eil in difficulties iu management. ■
A children’s concert and Xmas lice have been arranged for Monday. 22nd. December in St. .Andrew’s Hall. The programme is a good and varied one. consisting of songs, solos, vocal and pianoforte duets, dialogues mid recitations. 'I lie proceeds arc iu aid of the travelling expenses of some of the children from the I’aoaiuii Orphanage, who are to spend a few weeks’ holiday here. There is to lie a sweet and cake stall in connection with the C hristimis Tree. The doors are open at 7.HD and the concert, programme begins at S o’clock. Admission Is. children (id.— Advt.
Verv good progress is being made with the construction of Kakapotaht bridge at the Little Waitaha. Every effort is being made to have the structure ready tor the lamb traffic from South Westland next month. The northern aiiproacli to the bridge is now in hand, and the southern will he commenced immediately after the NowYear. The pile piers are well capped, and the corbels will he in position early next week, when the first set of steel joists will he placed iu position. There has been delay with the joists owing to the large amount of boring to he done, hut the work is exjiediled as milch as possible, and the const! notion is being hastened by Bridge-Fore-man Reynolds as rapidly as possible. .All the men helping to the fullest extent. The structure will cost at least C2.G00.
