BOYS AND “BLIND ALLEY” OCCUPATIONS. WELLINGTON, December 18. The finish of the school year witnesses another attempt hy the Labour Department to grapple with the serious problem of checking the drift of hoys into unskilled and “ blind alley ” occupations. The aim of the department is to find the trade for the boy and the hoy for the trade. The boy is, first of all,- caught as he leaves school and lii.s aptitudes and capabilities arc noted hy his headmaster on a form returnable to the Labour Department. A duplicate of this form is supplied to the boy for use as a reference. A part of it may he detached and sent to the department as a notification that the hoy would like to avail himself of any opportunity/ that the department can offer to eatable hint to enter a particular trade. From these notifications is supplied a register of Ikjvs desiring opportunities to be aoprenticeil to skilled trades. If any employer is at ally time in a position to offer such on opportunity, all that he needs to do is to ring up, or write to, or call at the department in Ghuzneq street, where the register is open for his inspection during office hours free of charge. The attached circular sent to all employers in skilled trade indicates the extent to which employers are expected to co-operate with the department.
