Tin-: Westland A. and I*. Association is moving again in the matter of the Annual Show. The day fixed is the third Saturday in February. It is a departure to hold the Show on a Saturday, hut there are several reasons why it is worth trying. The change for the week -end. rat'her than the mid-week, we are inclined to think will ho for the better. However, whatever day is fixed, there is the obligation on the community to help all it can. The allow should he a prospering concern now that the district is linked with Canterbury, and good support at this end should certainly ensure success. The farmers of the district have a full two months in wliieh to prepare for the event, and with timely preparation much can he achieved. The pastoral pursuits in this district are very substantial, and the return now from stock and agriculture (including dairying) adds substantially to the annual wealth. A good show is an advertisement for the district as a whole, and has a general effect in advertising the district to the mutual advantage of all. February is about the best month in the year for outdoor gatherings, ami with reasonable attention the stock should look at its host. In tin* past there have been some very good displays, and those records could lie excelled, dust now the district is doing remarkably well with the highprices for wool, the good prices for sheep and lambs, and the satisfaeiory price and yield of butter fat. Set Hers engaged in lhe.se pursuits would find it tu their general advantage to do a little advertising by competing with their products at the show. They will not only he helping themselves hut also assisting to make the display wider and more general. The number of exhibitors could well he increased, and w' are quite satisfied the quality will advance also. The matter is one whi affects land values. Anything the nett lers can do to improve the value of their properties is to the general advantage also of the district. Help as suggested will he afforded in a good cause, giving a general benefit all cause, giving a general benefit all round, and a successful show will add very certainly to the prestige of the district in the matter of farming pursuits and laud values.

It was veiv good of the Member for Westland (.Mr O’llrien) to interest himself in the 1 old age pensioners at the Westland Hospital, where Home adjustment of pension payments has been made recently owing tu the extremity of the Hoard in Ihe matter of its finance. The matter is one of Hoard management. It appears that recently the drift was so pronounced, and the cost of new buildings so great, that notwithstanding a liberal (hivcrnmcnt grant, the Hoard found itself in great difficulty to carry on without making a further levy on the local bodies. The generous donut ion of the Ilokitikn Savings Hank appeared to have averted such drastic action, hut meantime the Hoard had begun to set ils louse in order bv overhauling its expeiidil lire. Knowing the gentlemen composing the Hoard of Trustees, it. is not likely that they would do anything ungenerous to the patients, more especially the aged folk who have been subject always to the kindliest treatment under the hospital service. What has happened is that for the time being a portion of the pension money is being appropriated towards the extra cost of administration forced up hv the increasing charge's the' Hoard has to meet oil all sides. Tl is clear that the comfort and convenience of the patients are not being curtailed, and that as lieretofore the Board, is doing all it can to meet the position in fairness to all concerned. By drawing attention to the matter. Mr O'Brien lias enabled the members of the Board to explain their administrative acts very clearly. The members are as earnest and as well meaning as over they were, and the jx'i - - scmnel of the Hoard is such that it is sale to sav there is no attempt nor any desire to do deliberate harm. Ihe Board is pursuing for the time being a policy of all round retrenchment forced on it liv the state of the finances. Till the linaucial year goes by and the position can he measured more accurately, there, is no occasion to lose confidence in the members of the Board. On flic contrary they have to he sympathised with rather in that they have to carry out what if it is not pleasant is at least unpopular, hut in their wisdom is deemed necessary, and so the (ask must he met. Now that the position has been cleared up there will lie a better understanding and the hope that the finances will so improve in the near future that it will he possible to remove any semblance of hardship or injustice.
