HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th. Tlie Council ct at 7.30 p.m. Present .Messrs H. Al. Coulson (voted to the chair), D. J. Evans, J. King, AV. Jeffries and G. Heinz. Apologies were made for the absenco of the Alayor and Air Alackny. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. AIOTJON OF CONDOLENCE. Air Coulson referred to tiie recent death of the lion. J. Grimmotid and moved that the Council convey to his widow its sympathy and condolence in her loss and place on record their appreciation of the past services of the deceased. Air Coulson said the late Air Grimmond was a man of sterling cliarae. ter who did his utmost- to further tho best interests of the country lie lived in. He had taken a very active part in local politics. Seconded b.v AH- Heinz and carried in silence. INAVARD CORRESPONDENCE. From D. Alelvor, stating that he would he able to take up his duties as overseer on Dec 2nd.—Received. '• Air Evans moved that the whole of the outdoor staff he placed under tho charge of the Overseer, and that he he given every possible latitude in carrying out his duties. Air Jeffries seconded the motion and urged that the Overseer see that tho Council got a quid pro quo for tho wages paid. The motion was agreed to. Front J. Lock and others drawing attention to the poor drainage at tho rear of their Hevell Street properties, and asking for improvement. —Received. Air Heinz said the proposed drain would have to run through private property. He thought the property owners affected should finance the work required. Air Jeffries moved that tho Chairman of Public AA orks Committcec report on the position at next meeting. Seconded h.v Air Hein.-'- and carried. Front Department of Internal Affairs granting permission for tlie opening of a grave and reinterment. —Received.

From Runanga School Committee applying for the use of Cass Square on January 24th.—Received and request granted. Front Hon. AA". F. Afassoy, AAcllington, promising nit early reply to request for a revaluation of the Borough. Received. 'Air Jeffries said the matter had been before the Council for a long time now and they appeared no further ahead. He moved that a reply he sent stating the letter was not satisfactory and ask that the request for a revaluation he agreed to. Seconded by Air Evans who asked that it he pointed out that it was 17 years since a revaluation was made. Air Coulson said lie had earlier opposed a revaluation ns inopportune hut ho thought the time had arrived now for a new valuation to ho made. The motion was agreed to. Front C. E. Sparkcs asking for a refund of deposit, on contract and quoting his value of the cart in use.—Received. It was resolved to have a valuation made of the curt; tho question of a refund of tho deposit being referred to the Finance Committee. From J. Culbiish applying for annual leave.—Received ; referred to Overseer to arrange.

From N.Z. Refrigerating Coy, notifying 103 sheep had been forwarded to Hokitika for the month.—Received. Front AfcKay tt Soil asking Council to ronair and reform the pathway adjoining their shop in Tattered Street. —Received: referred to Overseer to give attention to. From A. Dctlalf, in reference to the sanitary contract.—Received; tho Town Clerk to reply. From J. Fox, poundkeeper in reference to loss on poundage fees.—Received ; referred to Finance Committee to deal with. 1 REPORTS. From Finance Committee recommending payment ol accounts amounting to L'-VH 7s 2d.—Received and adopted. Fioiii Abinuger ol .Abattoirs (J. Jarman) reporting the billowing stock was examined during the month: —21 cows, 31 heifers, 5(1 bullocks, 193 sheep, \ 12 lambs. 11 pigs, 10 calves. Condemned 1 calf. Fees for period £SB Bs, (last year L'G2 3s).—Received. Air Jeffries urged that the Council take a firm stand in 'regulating tho traffic in Hampden Street on race days. He moved that the traffic on those days be ordered to go to tlie course by way of Hampden Street and return to town by way of Stafford' Street and that the police be asked to assist in tlje matter. Seconded by Afr Heinz, supported by Air Coulson and agreed to. Air Evans referred to tlie success of tlie action taken by tlie Cottneil in reference ly> heavy traffic and also' to the parking of motor cars and asked that a definite parking place he fixed. Referred to -Messrs Coulson anil Heinz to attend to. The Chairman extended the seasons greetings to members; this being tho last meeting of the year. The Council rose at 8.10 p.m.
