A most important development ill the meat trade has I icon the phenomenal increase in tin- continental demand, declared Mr David Jones, on his return from an investigation ol markets abroad on behalf of the Xew Zealand .Meat Producers’ Hoard, of which he is Chairman. Mr Jones considered dial this development would have an important and highly favourable effect on the future of the heel export trade. Until recently it had not paid to export beef, but already, under the stimulus of Continental consumption, an improvement had taken place. Discussing primary markets in general, Mr .Tones was confident that Xew Zealand could continue to compete successfully with the world in meat and dairy produce. The natural advantages of the Dominion's wonderful climate and pastures more than offset the handicap of distance from the m.arkcls. The market [or Xew Zealand meat was extending in Mritain, due chiefly to the fact that more and more was selling in provincial towns. The Commission of Inquiry into the collapse of the Western Wharf on Oct. og t h has come to the conclusion in its report, which was submited to a special meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board that in view of all the circumstances, it is clear that the designs and plans of the structure were neither good nor sufficient, the design lieing defectivo in that it provided a structure and an arrangement ot parts of such a nature that stresses of the character which the wharf was unable to bear must develop in it.
